Evergy was mandated to conduct Technical Due Diligence for the acquisition of a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Alfeld, Lower Saxony, Germany.
The project is situated near an existing high-voltage substation operated by the local DNO, Avacon, and is located on repurposed agricultural land. The system comprises 72 battery containers equipped with inverters and 36 medium-voltage transformers. Grid connection is facilitated via a project-owned high-voltage transformer station, linking to the DNO’s 110 kV switching station. At the time of the mandate, all necessary permits and grid capacity had been secured. However, the technical design was still being finalized, and contractual negotiations were ongoing.
The services of Evergy comprised in particular:
- Analysis of site specific characteristics and evaluation of planning and environmental constraints
- Review of grid connection status and associated infrastructure
- Assessment of BESS operational strategies and impact on revenue streams
- Verification of key technical inputs for financial modelling
- Contractual review of EPC, O&M, and HV substation agreements
- Evaluation of battery warranties and technical specifications of battery containers
